Orthodontics for adults and children

Hanlon & Gardner provide orthodontic treatment to correct irregularities of the teeth or developing jaws and to improve the function and appearance of the mouth. Orthodontic treatments are available for adults and children so please call us today to find out how we can help.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a way to straighten teeth and is usually done during teenage years when the teeth are going through a period of growth. Many adults also have treatment to straighten crooked teeth or if they want to improve their appearance.

How frequent are the appointments?

Several appointments may be required to assess the problem, take impressions, arrange for any extractions and fit the appliances. In some cases, you may need to be seen every 4-8 weeks to assess progress and have any adjustments made.

Should I expect to be in pain during treatment?

When an appliance is first fitted this can add pressure on the teeth and can cause some discomfort for the first few days, although this tends to wear off fairly quickly. To eliminate irritation to the lips and cheeks we will usually provide soft wax to place over the brace to help relieve problems until they settle.

How long will orthodontic treatment last?

On average, treatment lasts between 18 and 24 months. When the brace has been removed, retainers are then fitted to hold the position of the teeth while they settle.

What if the brace breaks?

In this case, you should contact us as soon as possible to arrange an appointment. Patients are given instructions on care of the appliance and what to do if the appliance is broken.

How does orthodontic treatment affect sport?

It is recommended that removable appliances are taken out for contact sports, as you run the risk of cutting the inside of the mouth. For fixed appliance, we recommend a mouthguard should be worn.
